Each unique Harbor History Museum (Gig Harbor, WA) design echoes the deeper history of our community. Adapted from original letterhead found in our collection, this design features the Oceania, the first boat built from the keel up at the Skansie Brothers Ship Yard in 1912. The brothers went on to build fishing boats, car ferries, and pleasure boats.
There were four Skansie brothers who settled in Gig Harbor from the island of Brac on the Dalmation coast?Peter, Andrew, Mitchell, and Joe. Between them they fished, built boats, and supported the fleet that fed the world. Today, numerous Gig Harbor fishing families carry on the trade?most fishing for salmon, but crab, squid, black cod, pollack, and sardines have been and still are active fisheries for the Gig Harbor fleet.
