PCCS launched the Disability Ally Initiative (DAI) in 2015 to address the systemic
problems facing people with disabilities directly. DAI focuses on transforming attitudes, practices, and institutional cultures through education, dialogue, and direct engagement with self-advocates. Through structured trainings and the dissemination of accessible educational materials, DAI has successfully conducted outreach to community members, businesses, and organizations across New York City. To date, the initiative has trained over 4,400 community members and professionals to become informed and inclusive disability allies. DAI?s approach emphasizes genuine learning and connection. Trainings are designed to demystify disability, challenge harmful myths, and provide practical tools for inclusive communication and interaction. Central to this work is the direct involvement of people with disabilities as educators and leaders. By elevating self-advocate voices, DAI not only changes how disability is perceived, but also shifts perception regarding who is recognized as an expert on this topic.
