Years ago, I was wandering through TJ Maxx when I found a beautiful muslin dragonfly crib sheet for $3.99. It was from a nice brand, and I thought, "You never know when you'll need a baby shower gift." So I bought it and packed it away in a box. & I completely forgot about it.
Four years later, while pregnant with Kate, we received the devastating news that she had agenesis of the corpus callosum. We were heartbroken. We already had one child with special needs, and suddenly we were facing a future filled with even more uncertainty, fear, and questions.
That same evening, I came across a box in the attic.
Inside was the dragonfly crib sheet. The one I had forgotten about for years.
As I held it, I learned that dragonflies symbolize transformation, change, adaptability, new beginnings, rebirth, light, and illumination.
In that moment, it felt like a reminder that although our journey wasn't going to look the way we planned, there could still be beauty, purpose, and hope ahead.
Today, the dragonfly has become a symbol of Kate's journey. She has faced challenges most people can't imagine, yet she continues to teach us about strength, resilience, and finding light in the hardest moments.
