From Columbus to the colonizers from Spain, France, and England, America's history is a litany of people who did not come to this land "the right way."
The map featured on this shirt design, "North America, as divided amongst the European Powers," is from 1774. You can see the original here from the New York Public Library. Much of the West is still part of Mexico. Louisiana still belongs to the French. Most significantly, the map maker has included the names of some Native nations that were not yet displaced or destroyed by the flood of European settlers.
Europe did not always "send their best" to the New World. Settlers came to the U.S. to escape their crimes in Europe, they stowed away on ships if they couldn't pay the fare, they lied to authorities if they could get away with it.
Our Founders were also enslavers?and while slavery was legal at the time, it has always been morally wrong.
At a time when permanent residents and U.S. citizens are being detained and naturalized citizens are being considered for deportation, the question of "legal" immigration isn't even relevant anymore.
Fight anti-immigrant xenophobia and honor Native land rights with one message.
