What is JHD?
Juvenile Huntington?s disease (JHD) is a less common, early-onset form of Huntington?s disease (HD) that begins in childhood or adolescence. It is a progressive disorder that causes the breakdown of brain cells in certain areas of the brain. With Juvenile Huntington?s disease (JHD), symptoms begin in childhood to early teen years. In addition to the symptoms of the adult disease, early signs in children may include seizures and stiffness. Children with JHD most often inherit the disease from their fathers. JHD is progressive with an initial phase of behavioral disorder, learning difficulty, gait disturbance, and mild chorea. A florid phase with signs of mental deterioration, rigidity, speech disturbance, and seizures. A terminal phase of bed confinement, hypotonia, and increasing seizures.
