Every year, sea turtles return to the beaches of South Walton and the Florida Panhandle to nest. These incredible animals have been making this journey for millions of years, but today they face challenges from coastal development, artificial lighting, marine debris, beach obstacles, and other human impacts.
At Friends of South Walton Sea Turtles, our mission is simple: promote sea turtle conservation through awareness and education.
That's why we encourage residents and visitors alike to remember three important words:
?? Clean ? Remove trash, fishing line, and beach gear.
? Dark ? Reduce lights visible from the beach at night.
?? Flat ? Fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before leaving.
These simple actions help create safer nesting beaches for sea turtles, hatchlings, shorebirds, and other coastal wildlife.
