MMSC is the only authorized rescue, rehabilitation, and release facility for marine mammals and the authorized first responders for sea turtle strandings & disentanglements in the State of New Jersey. The MMSC is a 501 (c) (3) private nonprofit organization. Our life-saving work is funded by private donations from the public, fundraisers, grants, and retail gift shop sales.

The inspiration for our latest "Respect the Locals" design is Grey seal #26-038, who was found in Atlantic City on April 27th with an injury on his shoulder. He was brought in for an overnight assessment to clean the wound and get a closer look at the injury. It was determined that the wound was superficial and the tissue was already in the process of healing, so he did not need to be admitted for medical treatment. Using a pink non-toxic livestock marker that will fade over time, he was marked #1 on the top of his head. If he is spotted again on another beach, this number lets us know that he has already been examined by our staff.

During his release back into the wild, Stranding Volunteer Justin Turner captured this amazing photo of the spunky Grey seal showing his teeth as a warning to the human observers to give him space and stay back.
