The Marine Learning Project is a Maine nonprofit advancing experiential maritime education for students ages 7?18. We connect young people to Maine's rich maritime heritage while preparing them for high-demand careers in the marine industry, trades, technology, and environmental stewardship ? all while helping address the state's growing workforce shortage.
Maine faces a workforce crisis driven by three converging forces: declining high school graduation rates (down from 18,000 graduates a decade ago to 11,500 today), an aging population, and post-pandemic job growth. Too many students are disengaged from learning, and too few are aware of the meaningful career pathways available to them on Maine's working waterfront and blue economy.
Through vessel-based, hands-on programs aboard the Schooner Harvey Gamage, students don't just learn about the marine industry ? they experience it. Discovery Voyages, our flagship workforce development program for students ages 13?18, immerses participants in sailing, vessel operations, and marine systems training. Along the way, they develop the skills that matter most: leadership, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
Our work extends beyond the vessel. The Rybachi Fearless Frosty program introduces students ages 7?14 to boatbuilding and beginner sailing. The Bravo Mooring initiative provides a hands-on platform for exploring marine engineering and sustainability. And our Northern Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Initiative connects students to real ocean conservation work through marine science and navigation technology.
The Marine Learning Project builds a skilled, inspired generation ? prepared to sustain Maine's working waterfront and lead the future of the marine industry.
