Koranda O?Tool Paramedics Incorporated (KOPI) is a Minnesota based 501(c)(3) responsible for consultation and education in emergency medicine and mental health. In 2018 we began The Arusha Project (TAP), after spending six weeks in Arusha working with Arusha Lutheran Medical Center (ALMC). KOPI is currently working to raise funds to support a trauma training course for police officers in Arusha.

THE PROBLEM

There are limited options available for emergency treatment and transport to the hospital in Arusha, Tanzania. This has had a dramatic impact on health, wellbeing, and life expectancy within this community. In Tanzania, traffic related deaths account for 32.9 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the World Health Organization. This is more than three times the incidence in the United States.

THE SOLUTION

Last year, with your support we were able to put 25% of the Arusha Regional Traffic Police through our prehospital trauma training. The program was a success and drew national attention. We will return in January 2021 to put an additional 25% of officers through our course. In addition, we will support that education through field preceptorship. Our paramedics will ride alongside officers, respond to emergencies, and provide valuable guidance along the way. 

WHAT SETS US APART

A unique part of our model is the incorporation of mental health education. We recognize the impact of trauma on the prehospital provider. We have partnered with PrairieCare, a U.S. based psychiatric organization, as well as an Dr. Rupa Joshi, an Arusha based psychologist to develop a component that will support patient and police mental health. Topics will include discussion on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), support for the trauma victim, and critical incident stress debriefing. All of this will be tailored to be culturally competent.

We need your help to fund this phase of The Arusha Project. Every dollar you donate will save lives and improve patient care in Arusha. We cannot put into words how large of an impact this program will make in Arusha. 

This short but thorough training could have a monumental effect on trauma outcomes for the region. Any donated funds will help us collaborate effectively with ALMC to ensure that the Arusha Police Department is appropriately prepared to address traumatic injuries.

100% of the proceeds from this campaign will go directly to supporting TAP by paying for program and administration costs.
